Structural work deserves Permanent Contracts!
On April 14 2026 from 16:00-17:00, on the Roeterseiland lawn behind the L building, we will hand over the petition to Prof. Peter-Paul Verbeek, who has agreed to represent the UvA’s Executive Board (CvB).
Our goal is to submit a petition with the most signatures possible. For that, we need your help.
Collective action depends on sustained engagement and structured communication. Your continued involvement at this stage is crucial. There are three things you can do in particular:
- Please spread the petition as much as you can! This means talking to colleagues, presenting the petition to students, and asking your department’s Point of Contact (PC) if you can help with flyering efforts. All necessary materials are attached to this email.
- Please attend the handover event, and invite colleagues and students to do so! Your attendance is crucial, as the more people who show support, the more impact we’ll have on the university’s decisions. We wish there to be at least 300 comrades in attendance to show that we are well-organized and unified!
- Please help with the organizing efforts, either by asking your department’s PC what tasks you can perform, or, if there is no PC, volunteering to be one! You can do so by reaching out to this email: ask.casualuva@gmail.com or send a message in the WhatsApp Community/Signal group, and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Folia: Casual UvA kondigt opnieuw nakijkstaking aan
Folia: "Casual UvA, een actiegroep van medewerkers met voornamelijk tijdelijke contracten, start opnieuw een nakijkstaking in blok 5. De actiegroep zegt ontevreden te zijn met de implementatie en de resultaten van het nieuwe docentenbeleid. De UvA stelt dat wel degelijk flinke veranderingen zijn doorgevoerd. "
Casual UvA re-activates Marking Strike
After a year of close monitoring, we are dissatisfied with the implementation, and as a resultwith the policy itself, namely the discrepancies between departments and lack of thegenerous application that was communicated. While we suspended in good faith, we do notfeel such faith was reciprocated. Thus, we re-activate the action.

"Een wegwerpdocent voelt hij zich. Vol enthousiasme gaf docent Marijn Scholte de afgelopen vier jaar les aan de faculteit Sociale Wetenschappen van de Universiteit Utrecht. Zijn studenten waren enthousiast, de beoordelingen goed. Toch werd zijn contract niet verlengd. Beleid, aldus de universiteit. Docenten die geen onderzoek doen, krijgen geen vast contract. Werk was er wel, een opvolger is aangenomen. Reden voor Scholte om naar de rechter te stappen. Hij wil zijn baan terug."

Folia: Actiegroep Casual UvA gaat voorlopig door met nakijkstaking
Casual UvA, een actiegroep met zo’n honderd medewerkers met een tijdelijk contract, gaat voorlopig door met de nakijkstaking omdat de actiegroep geen vertrouwen heeft in de inwilliging van de eisen. Dat is tijdens een vergadering op woensdag besloten.

Weijts: "Het is geen gúnst die hij en zijn collega’s uit Leiden en Amsterdam hier vragen, bij de start van cao-onderhandelingen binnen, in het Academiegebouw. Een van de eisen is dat ze domweg de wettelijke regelingen toepassen. Na maximaal drie losse contracten hoort een vaste te volgen."

Press Release: COLLECTIVE ACTIONS TO CONTINUE
Following a collective vote among the striking departments—based on the responses of leadership to Casual UvA's strike demands—a motion has passed to continue the strike. Due to a lack of urgency and transparency, we are not confident in how the proposed Central HR policy will be implemented at various organisational levels. [...] To mitigate the impacts of these actions on our students, the eight striking departments have agreed to release Block 4 grades within 15 working days. Further, our marking strike action will now apply to Block 5 grades with immediate effect.

Huistra: "Wat is dan wel het grootste schandaal? Een goede kandidaat: de arbeidsomstandigheden van tijdelijke docenten. Elke Nederlandse universiteit heeft zulke docenten; 60 procent van de werknemers met een volledige onderwijsaanstelling is in tijdelijke dienst. Zonder hen zou het universitaire onderwijs instorten. En toch worden ze behandeld als wegwerpwerknemers."

Lukas Ziel of The Decolonization Club writes about Casual UvA: "The worst effects of casualisation are felt by already marginalised lecturers, gendered and racial pay gaps exacerbating already precarious conditions. And as so very often, the university is more concerned with attention being called to the problem, rather than with the problem itself."

A letter to the students of the striking departments: "Thank you for your solidarity and patience as we work towards an outcome for better education. We also understand that some of you may be frustrated by delayed grades, and apologise for the inconvenience this may cause."
